RBI Central Board Approves Record ₹2.86 Lakh Crore Surplus Transfer to Government for FY26

The 623rd meeting of the Central Board of Directors of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was held on May 22, 2026 in Mumbai under the chairmanship of Shri Sanjay Malhotra, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, where the Board reviewed the global and domestic economic scenario and approved the annual accounts of the central bank for the financial year 2025-26.

The Central Board approved transfer of a record surplus of ₹2,86,588.46 crore to the Central Government for the accounting year 2025-26 after considering the RBI’s financial performance, macroeconomic conditions and maintenance of adequate risk buffers under the revised Economic Capital Framework (ECF).

According to the RBI, the gross income of the Bank increased by 26.42 per cent over the previous year, while expenditure before risk provisions rose by 27.60 per cent. The net income, before risk provision and transfer to statutory funds, stood at ₹3,95,972.10 crore in FY 2025-26 as against ₹3,13,455.77 crore in FY 2024-25.

The RBI’s balance sheet also recorded significant expansion during the year. As on March 31, 2026, the balance sheet size increased by 20.61 per cent to ₹91,97,121.08 crore.

The Board also reviewed the revised Economic Capital Framework, which provides flexibility to maintain the Contingent Risk Buffer (CRB) within a range of 4.5 per cent to 7.5 per cent of the balance sheet size. Taking into account prevailing macroeconomic conditions and the Bank’s financial position, the Central Board approved transfer of ₹1,09,379.64 crore towards the CRB for FY 2025-26, compared to ₹44,861.70 crore in the previous year.

Following the transfer, the RBI decided to maintain the Contingent Risk Buffer at 6.5 per cent of the size of the RBI balance sheet.

The Board also deliberated on the global and domestic economic outlook and associated risks amid evolving financial and macroeconomic conditions.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Governors Shri Swaminathan J., Dr. Poonam Gupta, Shri Shirish Chandra Murmu and Shri Rohit Jain. Other directors present included Shri Anand Mahindra, Shri Venu Srinivasan and Shri Pankaj Patel.
